What you should know about Page-level Ads?

In September 2015 Google AdSense has implemented the new feature called Page-level Ads, which was created especially for mobile-optimised versions of websites or blogs. There are few things that you should definitely know about.

Mobile population?

The number of mobile phone users is steadily growing each year. According to Statista the number of mobile phone users will reach almost 70% of global population by 2019 and it is an ongoing trend. This broadens the opportunities for various businesses, particularly for those, which connected to the advertisement industry. Therefore, it is very important to keep up with all the newest trends and updates.

If you work with multiple ad networks, you have probably noticed that the idea behind Page level Ads isn’t very new. Nevertheless, for those of you who is using only AdSense, such implementation is very useful. Therefore, we prepared the information about what is Page-level ads, what are the benefits and where to find them in the AdSense and you can find it below.

What is Page-level ads?

Page-level Ads are for the mobile only type of ads, which is available on high-end mobile devices. For those of you, who is not really sure what is high-end mobile devices: basically it is a high class phone or tablet, which in most cases and very simplistic understanding can be recognized by its high price.

Page-level Ads come in two types: anchor/overlay ads and vignettes.

The former one appears at the bottom of a page on your mobile devise’s screen and covers only the bottom part of a screen. The latter one covers the full screen when you switch pages and it is loading, many of you know them as “Interstitial ads”.

Before such development, it was only possible to serve small text and image ads, while the new ones are much larger and therefore more noticeable.

What are the benefits?

As it was already mentioned in the previous section, page-level ads come in a larger format than it was available with standard formats. Therefore, it catches much more attention.

Some publishers might feel a bit concerned about the fact that such ads are only for high-end devices, but there is no need to worry. Google AdSense automatically detects high-end devices and serves a larger ad, so once you enable this feature, your ads will be automatically optimized. Moreover, vignettes will be optimized in such way that they will not appear after every link, so that they won’t disturb the users too much. Also neither overlay nor vignette ads count towards Google AdSense ad limit, which is good for publishers as they have the opportunity to serve more ads and increase earnings.

While it might sound a bit annoying for users, it is easy to dismiss both overlay and vignettes ads, so there is no need to look at them if they do not want it. Among other benefits, Google AdSense shows those ads at optimal times, so that it creates more revenue and encourages better user experience.

To sum up, the benefits of Page-level ads are the following:

  • Larger format;
  • Automatic optimisation for high-end devices;
  • Doesn’t count in ad limit;
  • Easy to close the ad;
  • Shown at optimal times;
  • Easy to integrate such ads.

Where to find page-level ads in your AdSense?

If you decided to run page-level ads, it is very easy to find them in your AdSense. All you need to do is:

  • Log in to your AdSense account;
  • On the top of the page there is “My ads” tab, click on it.
  • On the left-hand side you need to go to the section “Content” and find Page-level ads.
  • Turn on the ad format you want to use

The next thing you will need to do is to get a code (just press the  button)  for your web site and place it in the <head> tag or at the top of the body tag.

At last, if want to check if your web site shows ads, you just need to take some mobile device and go to your website. The ad should appear there.
